“Learning of my grandmother’s suffering and sacrifice in her short life has given me the courage and creative power to bring forth her legacy, as a desire for all women to know that they CAN change the narrative.”
— Mary Jane’s “Court”, Founder
#HerStory
Until I founded Mary Jane’s Court in 2020, I struggled with a life-long void I felt over the passing of Mary Jane Ragin, the maternal grandmother I never got a chance to meet.
Mary Jane passed away while my mother was yet a child. Throughout my life, stories and memories shared by various family members have helped shape an intriguing, yet confusing image of exactly who this woman was.
While I've been blessed to know and be reared by a wonderful paternal grandmother, my curiosity about the short life of Mary Jane only increases with time. This nagging feeling of being incomplete would follow me home after every trip to her birthplace of Summerton, South Carolina.
Legacy Creator
One day I just woke up and decided that it was okay. It's okay to not have all the answers…
That day I decided that it was going to be up to me to create a legacy that my Mary Jane would be proud of. And as I continue on, I’m learning that it isn’t about all the things I feel I’ve missed in her absence. It’s actually about everything I’m capable of overcoming because of her suffering and sacrifice.
Changing the Narrative
Maybe we can’t rewrite history, but we can change the narrative! I want to pay tribute to my ancestor by creating a space where women from all walks of life can feel uplifted and empowered to thrive and to flip the script on chapters of #herstory that are no longer serving her.
